Ukraine’s response to Russia’s jet-powered Geran attack drones cannot be reduced to a race for higher interceptor speed, according to a new Unmanned Airspace analysis. The article describes a shrinking engagement window as newer Geran variants combine turbojet propulsion with mesh radio communications and other defensive features, while stressing that detection, tracking and command-and-control integration remain central to the defense problem.
The analysis reports that Ukraine has been testing four high-speed interceptors and that around 20 Ukrainian companies are working on such systems. It also says most current intercept drones top out at 250 to 300 km/h, while Ukraine’s Alexa Spatium has been announced with a claimed speed of up to 600 km/h. Those figures describe advertised or reported platform performance, not a demonstrated ability to detect, track and defeat Geran targets in an operationally representative engagement. The same analysis notes that claims the revised Geran K5 could reach approximately 900 km/h lack actual speed measurements.
A separate October 23 report from the same publication provides a concrete example of the integration stage. Canada’s North Vector Dynamics and European firm CSG agreed to work on integrating NVD’s CM-70 interceptor into CSG systems. The report describes CM-70 as a low-cost interceptor intended to defeat high-speed, highly manoeuvrable uncrewed aircraft and says the system is built on an open architecture for integration with existing layered air-defence systems. It does not say that CSG already operates such a network.
Taken together, the reports show a distinction between an interceptor’s claimed kinematic capability and a deployable counter-UAS capability. The current reporting documents planned integration and a broader Ukrainian development effort, but it does not establish CM-70 combat use, a measured Alexa Spatium interception or an autonomous engagement capability. Human control, sensor performance and the effectiveness of the proposed layered architecture remain unverified in these documents.
